Root Canal

Root canal treatment, often simply called a “root canal,” is a crucial dental procedure to salvage a tooth afflicted by a damaged or infected pulp. Situated at the tooth’s core, the pulp houses nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When decay, trauma, or a crack penetrates deep enough to affect the pulp, inflammation or infection may occur, necessitating a root canal.

The root canal process involves several key steps:

  • Diagnosis: The Dentist assesses the extent of damage or infection through examination and X-rays to determine the necessity of a root canal.
  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure.
  • Access Opening: A small opening is created in the tooth’s crown to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
  • Pulp Removal: The infected or damaged pulp is carefully removed from the pulp chamber and root canals. The canals are then meticulously cleaned and shaped in preparation for filling.
  • Filling: The cleaned and shaped root canals are filled with a biocompatible gutta-percha material to seal them off and prevent further infection.
  • Sealing the Access Opening: The access opening in the tooth’s crown is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
  • Restoration: A dental crown is often needed to restore and protect the treated tooth, as it may become brittle over time without its pulp. This crown provides strength and shields the tooth from further damage.

Root canal treatment is an effective means of preserving a tooth that would otherwise require extraction. It relieves pain and addresses infection, allowing patients to retain their natural teeth. With proper care, a tooth with a successful root canal can function normally and endure for a lifetime.

Modern dental techniques and anesthesia have made patients’  root canal treatment more comfortable. If you’re experiencing severe toothache, swelling, or prolonged sensitivity, seeking prompt dental evaluation is crucial. Early intervention often prevents the need for more invasive dental procedures in the future.
