Therapeutic Botox
Discover Therapeutic Botox at Our Botox Clinic in Niagara Falls
Botox, derived from a purified protein, is more than a cosmetic treatment. It’s also used therapeutically to address various medical conditions. Our Botox Clinic in Niagara Falls offers therapeutic Botox treatments to alleviate symptoms associated with TMJ disorders and tension headaches.
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable medication that is widely used for aesthetic purposes as well as to treat many medical conditions. It is a purified protein derived from bacteria that works by blocking nerve signals to the treated muscle. Without a nerve signal, the muscle fibres are not able to contract resulting in relaxation of the muscle. This effect lasts for approximately 3-4 months, after which the botox begins to wear off.
How is botox used therapeutically?
People who suffer from TMJ symptoms such as muscle pain from clenching and grinding as well as tension headaches may find relief from their symptoms with botox treatment. Botox is injected to relax the masseter and temporalis muscles responsible for closing and clenching the jaw. The forehead muscles can also be treated if tension is present in those areas.
What happens during the appointment?
We will review your symptoms and determine if you are a good candidate for botox treatment. Your muscles will be palpated and marked to determine the necessary injection points. Photographs will be taken for documentation purposes. Your dentist will determine the appropriate dosage for you and the botox will be injected in a series of small pricks. You should remain upright and avoid rubbing or massaging the injection sites for several hours after treatment. You can expect to return to your daily activities as soon as you leave the office. Although some improvement can be felt within a day or two, the treatment may take up to 2 weeks to take full effect.
